ARD Query Manager & MARPLOT Tools

Query Manager Menus

The drop-down menus that are available in Query Manager allow the user to set defaults, interact with the query, and facilitate communication and viewing in MARPLOT (the companion mapping application).

FILE

Open - Lets you specify alternative directories where QM datasets reside.

Save As - Saves the query output table using the filename you specify. You may save the output as a DBF file, Excel spreadsheet, or tab- or comma-delimited text file. Note: If the browse has been restricted to records selected in MARPLOT, choosing "Save As..." results in saving only those restricted records.

Quit - Exits the Query Manager Program.  All queries that have not been saved to an external file will not be saved.

EDIT

Copy - Puts the selected text in the clipboard.  The user may select text from the Query info window, or from results table cells.

Find - Searches in the current table or help file for the next occurrence of the text you specify, and selects it if found.

Find Again - Repeats the last Find.

QUERY

Run Query - Runs the currently selected query.

Browse All - When the browse has been restricted to records selected in MARPLOT, removes the restriction so that all of the records are visible.

New Query - Brings forward the primary Query Manager window.

BROWSE

This menu lists the names of all query results browse windows created in the current session of Query Manager.  Before any queries are created, this menu list is blank.   When a query in the list is selected, it is brought forward to either view the results in table form, or to send the results to MARPLOT.

MARPLOT

Go To MARPLOT - Opens, or returns to MARPLOT.

Get Info on Selected MARPLOT Objects - Displays those QM records that are currently selected in MARPLOT.  If the selected objects belong to more than one query layer, you will be asked to select only one of them.

Show Selected on Map - Displays the MARPLOT object for the currently selected record. (Objects for all records in the current query will first be plotted in MARPLOT, if this has not already been done.)

Show All on Map - Displays the MARPLOT objects for all of the records in the current table. (Objects for all records in the current query will be plotted in MARPLOT, if this has not already occurred.)

Rescale When Show on Map - If selected, the MARPLOT view will automatically zoom to encompass the selected objects.  If not selected, MARPLOT zooms to the previous zoom extent.

Set Show Names Scale - Allows you to specify the scale at which name labels for objects are to be drawn on the map. The names appear at the specified scale and at all larger (more zoomed-in) scales. This scale will apply to all subsequently plotted queries.

Set Icons -> Dots Scale - Allows you to specify the scale at which point objects are to be drawn as dots instead of icons. Symbols will be drawn as dots at the given scale and at all smaller (more zoomed-out) scales. This scale will apply to all subsequently plotted queries.

Build Map Index - Creates a file that enables fast loading of maps.  Perform this action once for each dataset with maps, and again whenever the "..._maps" folder changes.

TOOLS

Auto-Documentation - Allows the user to view (or copy) information that describes the specific query.  Information recorded in the autodoc.txt includes the time/date the query was run, the watershed dataset, data path to the dataset, Query Group, Query, and other user selections such as chemical, treatment of 'Below detection limit' samples, and selected options in the Tools menu.  This file is automatically created (and updated) with each new query.  Selecting this Tool option merely causes this information to display within Query Manager.

Station List - Allows the user to select a previously created 'Station List'.  Station lists can be used to easily subset a watershed's stations, perhaps by year of study, by type of data, etc.

To create a station list, we recommend that you build the "All Data Types: Station Locations by Study" query.  Display these stations in MARPLOT by using Query Manager's "MARPLOT: Show All on Map" menu option.  After the stations are displayed in MARPLOT, use the arrow-shaped tool to select stations to be included in the 'Station List' (drag a rectangle or use SHIFT+Click to select stations).  You may be asked to select which layer you wish to select from.  Next, use MARPLOT's "Sharing: Query Manager: Create Station Group" menu option to return to Query Manager.  When you click on the displayed table, you will be allowed to save the station list.  Leave the station list in the default directory ([dataset...]\_sList).  Saved Station Lists are available from Query Manager's Tools: Station List..." menu option.

Export Sub-Watershed - Allows the user to create a complete Query Manager watershed dataset (data and maps).  First, select a station list using the Tools: Station List... menu option.  Next, select the Tools: Export Sub-Watershed... menu option, fill in the blanks, and click 'Finish'.  The dataset will be created in the qm26win directory.  See above for directions on creating a station list.

Depth in Centimeters - Allows the user to output sediment core depth values in metric units.

Depth in Feet - Allows the user to output sediment core depth values in English units.

Exclude Zero Lat/Longs - Excludes stations with coordinates (0,0) from the results tables.  This is set as the default for display in MARPLOT since the (0,0) coordinates cause MARPLOT to zoom out to an extreme extent.

Include Zero Lat/Longs - Allows stations with coordinates (0,0) to be included in the results tables.  (These stations are commonly the control samples.)

Export to FIELDS - Creates an additional results table for certain queries that are formatted for use in EPA's FIELDS program.

Rebuild Index Files - Recreates the index files associated with the dataset.  This is performed automatically with new datasets, but should be performed again if any of the dbf tables in the dataset have changed, or are replaced.

List Structure of Tables - Creates a text file that describes the format of the tables and the fields for a QM dataset.

Tools Help - Displays this sub-section of this help file.
